The 1 Train to Board For an Epic Front-Row Seat to the Swiss Alps

I’ll admit, before last year, I was never one to be keen on train travel. Sure, I loved the idea of having more leg-room and being able to pack more than 3.4-ounces of liquid in my carry-on, but the overall efficiency of flying always won me over. That is, until I climbed aboard the Bernina Express to make the journey across the Swiss/Italian Alps.

Arguably one of the the most scenic railway routes of all time, this train tugged at my heart strings in ways I didn’t even know were possible. Thanks to the 55 winding tunnels, 196 bridges, and the blissful blend of lush countryside and icy glaciers, this thrilling four-hour ride opened my eyes to an entirely new way of travel. And one I can’t wait to experience again. So if you’re on the hunt for your next epic adventure, scroll ahead to find out why the Bernina Express should become just that!

One of the many magnificent things about the Bernina Express — besides the scenery — is how it connects two countries: Italy and Switzerland. In as little as four hours, this train will provide direct access from the Swiss city of Chur to the small, mountainous town of Tirano, Italy (pictured above); making the ride as convenient as it is exhilerating.

While most people start their journey in Switzerland, I highly recommend doing the opposite if you’re hoping to avoid the crowds. Since my husband and I were coming from Lake Como, we decided to board in Tirano, and practically had the entire train car to ourselves.

As if the idea of becoming face-to-face with the awe-inspiring Alps isn’t enough of a reason to climb aboard, the train’s panoramic windows is guaranteed to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, as you’ll be able to feast your eyes on countless unobstructed views.

With over 89 miles to cover and a whopping 7,300 feet to climb, you’ll quickly realize this route is not only visually appealing; the engineering behind this acclaimed railway is intriguing as well. Thanks to the brilliance of the Brusio Circular Viaduct, there is a point in which the track circles around itself — kind of like a giant slinky — and assists in spreading out the seven-percent incline up the steep Alpine gradients.
